Though we couldn’t find a way
To stay together forever,
In a shoe box I keep
All your letters —
Scraps of dense lined paper
torn around the edges,
with little-to-say squarish play,
“Morning. Here’s your lunch for today”
"Good luck with that nasty paper"
"Off to Montreal, I'll see you later."
"Rough winds do shake, the darling buds."
"Out fishing, back at one."
And every year at the end of May
You'd leave one that'd say "Happy Birthday!"
Today, between the couches
I found another one
“You must have lost your phone.
I love you, hun.”
And then I found my phone
in between some cherry seeds and gum
and thought
Maybe
I should call you some time.
For fun.
